I went to the drive-in movie theater last night and was presented with the choice of watching Fury (starring Brad Pitt) or John Wick (starring Keanu Reeves). I chose Fury, and couldn't have been happier with my choice. I can easily say it was one of the best movies I have seen in a long while.
The movie was written and directed by David Ayer, who is responsible for also writing and directing Training Day and the first Fast & The Furious movie. It stars Brad Pitt along with Shia LeBeouf, Michael Peña, and the Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal.
The story follows a tank crew as they fight through war-torn Germany at the peak of the 2nd World War. The action is intense, the theme is realistic, and the characters are complex.
The action stops only long enough to give you interesting insight into how the characters think, and why they behave the way they do. The majority of the movie consists on heart-pounding action and thrilling fire fights.
I cannot remember the last time that I saw a war movie where I felt so involved in the conflicts. The entire theme of the movie gave me a sense like anyone could die, at any moment. I grew attached to the characters, and interested in getting to know them better. The fear that they could be removed from the cast by a stray bullet at anytime made it all more realistic. A genuine war experience.
I can't recommend this movie enough. It is loaded with drama, action, and humorous banter between scenes. I will warn you however, the movie is pretty gory - so if you intend to take a lady with you make sure she can keep down her dinner.
